The Japanese Chin is also called the Japanese Spaniel, and these dogs got their start as lap dogs for Japanese nobility. They have not really evolved since then, preferring to sit on peoples’ laps all day. They have been described as “cat-like” in their personality. These dogs are intelligent, loyal, and independent.
